Home Instead Dartford & Bexley is proud to announce the official opening of its innovative Dementia Experience Hub, a new public resource designed to give the local community profound, first-hand insight into the sensory challenges of living with dementia.
The hub was officially opened by Andrew Sayers, Service Manager for Alzheimer's Society Bexley. The inaugural session was attended by some of his team and local Councillor Nicola Taylor (Shadow Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health).
The unique experience immerses participants in the sensory realities of dementia, offering an eye-opening understanding of how the condition impacts daily tasks.
Local leaders and rest attendees are calling the experience 'shocking' and 'eye-opening,' revealing the hidden struggles of those living with the condition.
Councillor Nicola Taylor shared her reaction: "Really interesting to experience how people with dementia are impacted and how it affects your ability to do things that we do every day and take for granted. Such a valuable experience for everyone so we can have more empathy and understanding of people with this disease." During the session, it was highlighted that 982,000 people are currently diagnosed with dementia in the UK, underscoring the vital need for greater community understanding and support.
The Hub, which is free for the public (appointment only), is an expansion of Home Instead Dartford & Bexley’s community commitment, led by Directors Christina and Ram.
Christina, Owner, commented: "We are very pleased to be able to provide something so meaningful to the community. We always want our training room to be more than just a training place for our team members; now this is where others can come and experience and learn meaningful knowledge around dementia."
This initiative is offered at no cost to remove financial barriers, a commitment championed by the owners. Ram Chandra Thapa, Owner, added: " I am proud to be able to offer something like this hub in our local area where people can come and experience it without worrying about the cost."
The Dementia Experience Hub complements the organisation's extensive community work, which includes providing free Dementia Awareness, Hands-only CPR, and Scam Awareness workshops to over 3,700 attendees to date, as well as running two music groups and the St John's Silver Birch Lunch.
