A survey carried out by Isle of Wight Council found a high number of the island’s carers are pleased with the support they receive from the authority.
The council sent surveys to the island’s 1,064 known carers, 454 responded and more than 80 per cent of those who did said they were either extremely, very or quite satisfied with the support they are the person they cared for received from social services last year.
This result put the Isle of Wight above the national average in terms of overall satisfaction with support, the quality of life reported by the carer and the proportion of people who found it easy to find information about services.
Isle of Wight councillor Stuart Hutchinson, responsible for adult and social care, said: “The contribution the island’s army of carers make to the individuals they care for and to society as a whole should never be underestimated.
“Their role is a vital one and it is absolutely right that they should get the proper support from the local council.
“I am pleased the results place us well in terms of comparison with other authorities. However it is our duty to further improve the support we offer and will strive to do that.”
