Good things come in small packages

11-Apr-16

For a Buckinghamshire pensioner, small is beautiful, especially when it applies to her loo!

The installation of her Clos-o-Mat Palma Vita wash and dry toilet has, she says, been a Red Letter Day that has changed her life for the better.

To put it in context, Claire Evans worked until she was in her 70s, and was for years the fastest secretary in the South East, with a shorthand speed of 175 words/minute and typing of 600 words/minute! Then, three years ago, she had two bad falls within 24 hours in her home, ‘smashing’ both her shoulders, breaking her fingers, and damaging her arm muscles and one of her legs. Days after an operation to repair the damage, a nurse dropped her onto a metal commode, further damaging her right leg and affecting the nerves in her already scoliotic spine. This has been followed by a ruptured bowel and peritonitis.

Appraisal by her local Social Services on behalf of her landlord Red Kite Housing has enabled her to have a Clos-o-Mat Palma Vita installed at her home in High Wycombe. Looking like, and capable of being used as, a conventional WC, the Palma Vita has built-in douching and drying, eliminating the need to wipe clean with toilet tissue, with all its associated issues of mobility, strength, contortion, balance and manual dexterity.

But, being only 4ft 8ins and 7st, Mrs Evans found it difficult to sit on for any length of time, and use. Clos-o-Mat manufacturer Total Hygiene has thus changed the seat for a junior soft seat, and added a touch-sensitive operating switch that Mrs Evans can trigger with her foot.

“I have always tried to have high standard, particularly when it comes to hygiene. It was a ray of sunshine to be told I could have a Clos-o-Mat; I was in such dire need of help. Since then, my life has changed hugely. I no longer dread feeling dirty, but it goes much deeper than that, believe me!,” she commented. “The Clos-o-Mat is a splendid thing. The seat size is perfect now, and is so comfortable: I spend so much time sitting on the toilet,it will now be a far happier time for me.”

The Clos-o-Mat Palma Vita is Britain’s top-selling wash and dry toilet, and the only one that has a raft of accessories to enable personalisation to individual needs, at the outset, and as their needs change over time. Over 150,000 permutations exist. Details of all the options, plus further case studies from real-life users, can be found on Clos-o-Mat’s website.
