Dementia Awareness Week

06-May-16

Drop in sessions for Dementia Awareness Week

PEOPLE from Wales who would like more information on Dementia or have any questions regarding care can drop into a care provider’s offices next month (May, 2016) for free advice.

Abacare, which has offices in Newtown and Bangor, is taking part in Dementia Awareness Week from May 15 until 21 and will have expert staff on hand to answer any questions people might have.

Sue Richardson, Operations Executive at Abacare, said: “Being faced with a friend or relative who may be showing signs of dementia can be scary and many people don’t know where to turn. If anyone has any concerns they are welcome to drop into our offices for some expert advice from our team during Dementia Awareness Week.

“We’re also available to talk to anyone who might be interested in our services as we provide Domiciliary and live-in care for elderly and vulnerable people as well as those with dementia.”

Abacare staff will be on-hand at its Newtown office at 1st Floor, St David’s House, Newtown, Powys, SY16 1RB and its Bangor office at 9, Ash Court, Parc Menai, Gwynedd, LL57 4DF.

People are welcome to drop in between 10am and 4pm from May 15 until 21.

Dementia Awareness Week was started by the Alzheimer’s Society and encourages people who are worried about dementia to confront their worries by addressing dementia directly and getting information and support.

There are currently 850,000 people with dementia in the UK and the number is set to rise to one million by 2021.

Sue added: “We have a committed dementia team and we offer one-to-one bespoke support for people living with dementia so they do not need to leave their familiar surrounding or pets.

“A service user’s family, carers and the person with dementia (where possible) are always involved in developing a care plan based on person-centred care. Their knowledge and understanding of the person is extremely valuable to make sure the care plan is right for the individual.”

Abacare operates a professional Care Management Team that is committed to providing high quality care to individuals in their own homes.

The large team of trained, specialist, care workers provide positive based outcomes and person centred care to people throughout the UK.

Its core values, instilled into every staff member, include ‘make us proud’, ‘focus on our service users’ wellbeing’, ‘communicate, listen well and speak with respect’, ‘be passionate, honest, caring and considerate’, ‘recruit and develop the very best’ and ‘lead by example’.

It is a member of the United Kingdom Homecare Association, Ceretas (formerly British Association of Domiciliary Care), The National Homecare Council and The Information Commissioners Office (Data Protection). It is also registered with the Care Social Services Inspectorate Wales.

Abacare was awarded an Investors in People accolade for its staff training and development for the fourth year running.

Investors in People is a national standard, which provides a framework that helps organisations to improve performance and realise objectives through the effective management and development of their staff.

Staff at the care agency were assessed to ensure the organisation met the requirements of the standard.

The care provider was named Britain’s ‘Most Outstanding Care Agency’ in the UK for 2014 and 2015 at the UK Over 50s Housing Awards.

Dementia Awareness Week takes place from May 15 until 21.
