At Home Instead Senior Care Sheffield and Barnsley they are extremely proud of their care model which has underlying importance of preventing loneliness.
Thus they were delighted that their Community Development Officer Kathy Markwick was present at the launch of The Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness on Tuesday 31 January 2017. During her time as a Member of Parliament Jo Cox was dedicated to tackling the loneliness crisis in the UK. In January 2016 this led her to form an independent, cross-party commission of organisations, campaigners and individuals.
After being recognised for her work behind setting up the successful SuperJam tea parties and the weekly Home Instead Friendship Lunches, Kathy was invited to the Houses of Parliament by Denise Bailey from the Campaign to End Loneliness.
Kathy said: "We had a fantastic day and it was lovely to meet Jo’s husband, sister and parents. The speeches were very emotional, but at the same time hugely inspiring. We all agreed that Jo would be extremely proud to know that a wonderful Mission on Loneliness had been created out of something so dreadful.
"At Home Instead Senior Care we hold Free Dementia Workshops, Free Dementia Friends’ Sessions, Superjam Tea Parties, Friendship Lunches and a Memory Cafe. Along with our WOW (What’s on Where) Guide, these are all undoubtedly excellent tools for us in our quest to combat/reduce loneliness and social isolation."
Ruth Brown from Home Instead’s National Office also attended the launch and highlighted their amazing work with the elderly and their mission: to change the face of ageing. As recent recipients of the Queen’s Award for Innovation in recognition of their companionship-based model they are focused on ensuring their clients never experience loneliness. They are making a difference to people’s lives through their bespoke relationship-led approach.
