Caregiver Caddies for Client

07-Aug-17

Local home care company, Home Instead Senior Care in Stevenage and North Herts has been helping local man Ian to pick up his golf clubs again, when he thought he may never play again.

Keen golfer Ian, is a client of Home Instead and due to ill health has been unable to play for some time. When his caregiver Peter heard about his love of sport and in particular playing golf, he decided to make his wish come true. He knew it would be difficult for Ian as he has vascular dementia, but he also knew just how much it would mean for him to play again, so he arranged for them to go to Chesfield Downs Golf & Country Club.

The duo go to the course in Graveley as often as they can and during their last visit Ian hit 50 balls on the driving range which is a real achievement.

Dave Marsh, owner of Home Instead explained, “It’s truly wonderful what Ian has been able to do, at Home Instead many of our clients are living with dementia, so we understand the challenges they can face. Peter has not only been able to support Ian but also his wife, helping her to be able to spend more time with Ian.

He continued, “We know that Ian is often tired after playing, but he is just so happy, it’s wonderful to see the joy in his face, he loves every minute. He also likes to take tea at the nineteenth hole, a tradition held by most golfers!”

Ian has also received support from the Garden House Hospice Care where he has been having help with physiotherapy and exercise, and support from the nursing and palliative clinical care team. The team at the hospice has a great relationship with Ian and Val and they have encouraged him all the way.

Dave added, “In our day to day work at Home Instead we often work closely with the hospice and we are so impressed by the tremendous work they do for the local community.

Garden House Hospice Care provides a wide range of services for patients, their carers, and families facing a life limiting illness. The hospice needs to raise over £3.2 million in total income every year so that they can run their services for people in North Hertfordshire, Stevenage, Royston and surrounding villages.
