Two Nurse Plus team members were in high spirits as they joined a group of disabled people at Lewisham College to create ‘share and care’ bags to distribute to local homeless shelters this Christmas as part of Leonard Cheshire Disability’s “Can Do” inclusive volunteering initiative.
Stevie Robertson and Rebecca James took part in Leonard Cheshire’s latest campaign, which coincides with International Day of Persons with Disabilities, to ensure that homeless people across London receive gifts this year.
Rebecca, commented: “We had an absolutely fantastic day at Lewisham College helping a class of students with severe learning disabilities to pack bags for the homeless. Everyone had such a good time, the students were engaged and ever so friendly towards us!
“It was a pleasure to be a part of such a rewarding day. We thank the students and programme coordinators for having us and hope to be a part of a similar event in the future.”
Organised through Leonard Cheshire Disability’s “Can Do” volunteering programme, created to provide exciting opportunities for disabled people to volunteer in their community and meet new people, the Nurse Plus team helped to fill and donate 440 bags across 22 locations.
Pamela Bruce, Nurse Plus Managing Director, added: “We are thrilled that once again our staff members have taken up the challenge to raise money for our chosen charity partner, Leonard Cheshire Disability.
“Christmas is such a joyous time for many and we can often forget that some people face the prospect of spending the holiday alone and on the cold streets of some of our biggest cities. We are honoured to be given the opportunity to help in any way we can.”
Leonard Cheshire Disability is a charity supporting disabled people in the UK and around the world to fulfil their potential and live the lives they choose.
A number of fundraising activities are being planned in 2018 by a number of Nurse Plus branches, including wing walking, sky diving and a trek across the Great Wall of China.
