In countless homes across Northumberland, silent acts of love, dedication, and unwavering support unfold every single day. These are the actions of unpaid carers – the devoted family members, loyal friends, and compassionate neighbours who tirelessly put the needs of others before their own.
Through our work, we often meet these unsung heroes and so we are delighted to partner with the Hexham Courant to recognise the sacrifices and celebrate the exceptional care provided by friends, family, and neighbours across Northumberland.
Unlike traditional ceremonies, the Northumberland Care Heroes Awards will take the celebration directly to the winners, with the Hexham Courant team surprising recipients at their homes, workplaces, or other community settings and filming these special moments.
The public is encouraged to nominate individuals who they believe exemplify compassion, dedication, and selflessness in their caring roles.
The six categories are:
Young Carer of the Year (Under 25) Recognises a young person who has shown exceptional dedication and responsibility in caring for a family member or friend, often balancing caring duties with school, college, or early career.
Family Carer of the Year Honours an individual providing outstanding care for a family member (e.g., parent, spouse, child, sibling). This could be for long-term conditions, disabilities, or age-related needs.
Good Neighbour/Community Carer Award Celebrates someone who goes above and beyond to support a neighbour or someone in their local community who isn't a direct family member. This could involve practical help, emotional support, or consistent check-ins.
Palliative Care Champion Recognises an individual providing compassionate and dedicated end-of-life care, ensuring dignity, comfort, and support for the person they are caring for and their family during a very difficult time. (This could be a family member or a close friend).
Mental Health & Wellbeing Carer Award Highlights a carer who provides crucial support for someone living with mental health challenges. This award acknowledges the unique demands and understanding required in such caring roles.
The Unwavering Dedication Award For a carer who has demonstrated exceptional long-term commitment and resilience, often over many years, adapting to changing needs and providing consistent, loving care through thick and thin.
