The Grandmother We All Gained At Pimelea’s Care Services, we’re privileged to support many remarkable people but every now and then, someone touches our lives in a way that stays with us forever. One of those extraordinary people was Grandma D. She wasn’t really our grandmother, of course but over time, that’s exactly who she became to us.

Mornings with Grandma D were... well, let’s just say they required strategy. She wasn’t a fan of early starts. In a quiet, almost whisper-like voice, we’d hear the familiar: "Go away… give me five more minutes." Followed by: "Leave me alone… give me another five." Those “five minutes” could stretch to an hour or more.

But we learned to adapt. We got creative. "I’ve already been here 30 minutes." "The ambulance is on its way because you’re not well!" That one usually did the trick: "What? I’m not going to hospital fine, I’ll get up." Some mornings, there were no words at all just one eye slightly opening, the classic stare, and complete silence until we gave up… or came back with more determination.

Despite the resistance, she had standards. Oh, did she have standards. Matching trousers and tops only never mismatched. A spotless home was non-negotiable. If there was even the tiniest bit of dust, we’d hear about it. Loud and clear. But everything changed downstairs.

Once Grandma D was up and settled, a different version of her appeared one full of light and joy. She smiled, oh how she smiled. She blew kisses, laughed with us, played dominoes (on her own terms), and delighted in her beloved chocolates. She waved us off at the end of our visits with a grin that made everything worth it. She showed us that caring for someone with love sometimes means thinking outside the box. That patience is important but occasionally, a little well-meaning mischief works wonders. She taught us about joy, about connection, and about perseverance.

Though Grandma D is no longer with us, her spirit remains firmly rooted in the heart of Pimelea’s Care Services. We miss her presence, but we carry her memory with every morning call, every gentle prompt, and every smile shared. Rest peacefully, Grandma D. You were loved like family and you always will be.
