Skills learned in other professions can often prove beneficial when people switch to a career in the home care sector.

That was the case for Akash Raza who had worked in banking before studying for a marketing degree at Birmingham University.

After leaving University he found marketing jobs hard to come by so began working in home care support to earn so money.

Akash found he enjoyed the job so much he took it up full time and now works over 40 hours a week with Caremark Leeds.

“Marketing is all about communicating with people and that’s very important in care work so my degree has definitely helped me with this role,” said Akash.

“You also need to be punctual and treat clients as individuals which I’d also learned from other jobs.”

When providing care and support to clients in their own homes Akash remembers his own parents who brought him up in Pakistan and who both sadly passed away in recent years.

“My mother died earlier this year and unfortunately I wasn’t able to get back to Pakistan to see her before she passed,” said Akash.

“Whenever I go to an older client’s house I feel like I am caring for my parents, that makes me happy and gives me a great sense of fulfilment.”

A father of four, Akash has made a positive impression during his time at Caremark and is a recent Carer of the Month Award winner.

“It’s so important to get to know the client, this can help you realise when something is not right, record it in the care plan and act on it,” he said.

“I enjoy my job and feel comfortable doing it, I feel it was my destiny to be a carer.”
