Promoting Independence South West provides personalised mentoring and practical support for people who want to build confidence, develop everyday skills and work towards greater independence. Rather than taking a fixed approach, the service focuses on what each individual wants to achieve and the steps that can help them get there.
Support can cover many aspects of daily life, including personal care and prompting, cooking, cleaning, budgeting and shopping. Individuals can also receive help with using public transport, taking part in community activities, accessing education and exploring voluntary or paid employment.
The service has experience working with people with a broad range of needs and circumstances, including mental health needs, brain injuries, cognitive decline, trauma, self-neglect, homelessness and drug or alcohol dependencies. Support is also available for individuals who may display challenging behaviours and for those returning to community life following formal treatment under the Mental Health Act 1983.
Choice and involvement are central to the service. Staff consider each person's abilities, preferences, and aspirations when planning support, and encourage individuals to make their own decisions and retain control where appropriate. Care and support plans are reviewed every three months, providing an opportunity to consider progress, adjust support and agree goals that remain meaningful and achievable.
Promoting Independence South West works in partnership with Cornwall Council, Cornwall NHS Trust and a range of other professionals and organisations. These include mental health and learning disability services, GPs, housing departments, employment agencies and charities. This collaborative approach helps coordinate support across different areas around the individual.
By combining practical assistance with mentoring and goal-focused support, Promoting Independence South West aims to help people take meaningful steps towards greater confidence, participation and independence in everyday life.

Karen Scott is the Founder and Registered Manager of Promoting Independence South West Ltd. Karen has extensive knowledge and experience working with Adults within Social Services, Primary Mental Health Trusts and charity sectors. As a Qualified Social Worker since 2010, Karen has a passion for people's rights, particularly those with Learning Disabilities, Mental Health and Physical Disabilities.
After completing her Newly Qualified Award in Social Work, a Post Qualification in Mental Health and completing Level 3 in Management and Leadership, Karen pursued her career within Cornwall County Council and Bath & North East Somerset Council as an Adult's Safeguarding Chair. This role evidenced the importance of good quality care and the roles and responsibilities of all professionals working with our most vulnerable people in society.
Karen lived in East Devon between 2016 and 2021 and worked in various Adult Social Care Teams, as a Team Manager from Community/hospital services to Countywide projects within Devon County Council. Karen now lives in Newquay, Cornwall. Promoting independence, safety, choice and rights for adults has been the main principle of Karen's practice and management of services. Karen states that 'our practice is embedded by strength-based and person-centred approaches to support and mentor our clients towards increased independence. This provides better outcomes and less reliance on services for our most vulnerable in society.
