If you live in Huddersfield and are a lover of art, then chances are you aware of the work of Betty Thornton.

Betty has been painting most of her and shows no sign of stopping, even at the ripe old age of 92.

A member of the Huddersfield Art Society for over 50 years, her work is now on display in homes across the world, including the USA and Australia.

In the summer of 2020, Caremark (Kirklees) had the privilege of being able to provide the care for Betty which is helping her to remain in her beautiful home which, naturally, is adorned with her artwork.

A mixture of reduced mobility (caused by a fall which resulted in a broken hip) and the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant she was no longer able to receive support from her friends, necessitated a little bit of extra support.

Thankfully, Betty’s son Tony has been able to ‘bubble’ with his mum, so he helps day-to-day whilst we visit her twice a week to attend to personal care needs, such as showering.

Betty, who is private paying customer, remains very independent and thanks to Tony has been able to continue seeing family and friends through the wonder of video calling, but she is very complimentary about the support we provide.

She says: “The carers are always very respectful to me and I generally get Anne-Marie who I can’t speak highly enough about.

“She is superb and helps me to do the things I can’t do.”

Tony adds: “Having support from Caremark to help with things like showering has really taken the weight off me, so I am very grateful.”
