Jenny Quinn may be slowly approaching retirement but like in her previous role working in a firework factory, we’re certainly not going to let her go without a bang.
For eight years Jenny has been ever-present at Caremark Kirklees. Because she is approaching official retirement age and likes to spend as much time as possible with her family, she now only has one customer, Richard, whom she sees for one each hour each week.
Jenny and Richard go back around 18 years, so when he became a customer of Caremark, he understandably still wanted Jenny to be his main carer and we were only too happy to oblige.
Richard has followed Jenny across multiple care providers, valuing her consistency, routines and reliability and he relies on Jenny not just for cleaning and shopping, but for essential support with tasks such as paying bills at the post office and managing day?to?day errands.
Jenny’s approach to care is grounded in routine, independence and making genuine connection.
She says: “I have always enjoyed working on my own because I have my own routines and the customers I have supported over the years have always appreciated that and knew exactly what to expect.
“Richard is a good example. We have become more like friends over the years than carer and customer, so as long as Richard is around, I will be too. Even though he has family, I think he would be stuck if he didn’t have me.
Before Jenny decided to choose care as a career, she worked in a factory which made fireworks, joking that she was always popular when Bonfire Night came around as people knew she received free fireworks as a perk of the job.
The perks are a little different now, but Jenny says she still appreciates the gifts she receives as a member of staff at Caremark Kirklees, at Easter and Christmas, as well as the flasks we gave to our team to keep their drinks hot and cold.
“Caremark are the best company I have worked for,” adds Jenny.
“The owners Duncan and Fiona are really nice and treat their staff well and the little things we receive throughout the year are nice, as are the Carer of the Year awards they organise which make you feel appreciated too.”
As she countdowns to her eventual retirement, Jenny is a living a full and happy life, spending three weeks abroad with her husband in Goa each UK winter and having lots of staycations throughout the year too. And with three children, five grandchildren and two dogs, there’s always something, other than Richard, to keep her busy.
