I started working in social care approximately 13 years ago as a career change. I originally trained in electronics and communications engineering back in the 80s and qualified to operate and maintain a ship’s radio station. I then spent a couple of years in the merchant navy as a Radio Officer. When I came ashore, I had a few jobs maintaining bank dealing room systems and office machines, before settling on joining the MoD where I worked as both a civil servant and consultant for a total of 22 years, finishing up at RAF Brize Norton. When I was 28 I made enquiries into dropping electronics and attending medical school, but my personal circumstances changed and I had to remain employed. When my contract at RAF Brize Norton ended I noticed an opportunity to work in social care. Working in social care I have found to be extremely rewarding. In my 13 years, I have met many different characters and carried out many different care tasks. I have found that my background in the MoD has assisted me greatly in social care, I spent a lot of time working with and enforcing standards. As a result, I continue to look for high standards both in the Care Workers we employ and the care that we deliver. I decided to start my own care agency predominantly because of the standards of care in the companies I previously worked at. Since working in adult social care I have completed both Level 3 and Level 5 Diplomas in Health and Social Care. I was the Training Manager in the last company I worked for, in that position I completed Train the Trainer which enabled me to provide all in-house training. With Chamomile Care I will continue to deliver all Induction Training and annual updates, together with encouraging all of our staff to undertake external QCF training.
