‘Incredible’ care assistant of the year
Rajwant Sandhu, who recently won the title of ‘incredible’ care assistant of the year’, revealed that she doesn’t think she could do another job, saying: “ I don’t feel like it’s a job. My customers are like family.”
She was chosen out of more than 6,500 Caremark care assistants in the UK to win the coveted award which was presented to her at Fortnum & Mason.
Rajwant has been a care assistant at Caremark’s Dartford & Gravesham franchise since 2019. Raspinder Singh and Gursh Baryah, Managing Directors of the Kent-based franchise, who nominated Rajwant, explained why she is such a worthy winner:
“Rajwant is not someone who seeks attention. She quietly gets on with her work, but the praise and gratitude from her customers and their families speaks volumes. She is trusted, respected and loved by those she supports.
“She handles complex and challenging situations with a calm professionalism, always ensuring her customers wellbeing, dignity and safety are prioritised. She is also one of our mentors for new carers, taking the time to guide and support them, especially those who are new to care, with patience and kindness.”
They highlighted that they had been asked to provide care for a man who was extremely resistant to personal care.
“Other, very experienced carers struggled and simply could not break down his barriers. His wife was becoming increasingly distressed with the ongoing, seemingly never-ending struggle.
‘No-nonsense but compassionate manner’
“When Raj went in, she approached the situation with calm persistence and empathy. To everyone’s surprise, the customer simply accepted her help without fuss. Raj’s no-nonsense but compassionate manner lifted a weight from the family and ensured the client’s dignity and hygiene were maintained.”
Another example of Rajwant’s dedication was with Jenny, a woman she has supported since 2021.
Jenny has advanced dementia and a beloved dog, Teddy, who is her only companion.
Over the years, Rajwant has not only provided outstanding personal care to Jenny but also become her strongest advocate, going above and beyond every single day to ensure her wishes are respected and her quality of life is maintained, including walking Teddy, cleaning Jenny’s house, liaising with social services, and taking Jenny to hospital appointments.”
David Glover, chief executive of Caremark, praised all the finalists and called Rajwant a “very worthy winner of our ‘Incredibles’ award for 2025″.
He added: “Her ability to build long-term relationships with customers, providing reassurance, consistency, and going above and beyond to ensure their wellbeing and dignity, makes her an indispensable member of the Caremark team.”
