We are so thankful for the excellent service we get from Home Instead Hereford; it makes it possible for us to remain in our own home. The office team are very friendly and helpful and we have our two (and now three) hugely valued regular carers, giving us 4-5 hours support per week; they are a perfect 'fit' for us. They are a joy to be with, and enhance our lives - from helping with showering to taking the bins out (or us!), and doing whatever needs doing. We love a cuppa and a chat, too.

The service has never let us down; is flexible to our changing circumstances, so that extra hours are there when we need them. Most notably, they recently responded instantly when one of us was suddenly 'blue lighted' to hospital, and alerted our carer, who arrived with great speed. She was able to take over, giving calm and skilled support, and liaising with the office, so that one or other of our carers provided all the cover we needed over a fraught 24 hour period. We could not have coped.

Dear Ann, you have described so well what we try very hard to deliver - a highly-personalised, flexible, responsive support service, from a very small team of care staff who get to know you really well, and can jump in at short notice, because they care, deeply. We don't 'take over' but support...

Home Instead in Hereford have been brilliant - not only in the excellent care they are giving my mum, but also in how they have advocated for her and supported our family.

The first two weeks after my mum was discharged from hospital were extremely worrying and exhausting, and Natalie at Home Instead guided me through every step with reassurance and professionalism.

Even over the weekend, before any formal care had started and our family were providing 24/7 support, Home Instead Hereford were there for us. They kept me grounded and then pulled out all the stops to make sure Mum had the care plan she desperately needed.

I cannot recommend Home Instead Hereford highly enough - their compassion, reliability, and commitment have made an enormous difference to my mum's recovery and to our family's peace of mind.

I suffer from multiple sclerosis and have mobility issues which limit my ability to care for myself.
I have had carers attending to me for the last month. 2 ladies visit each morning at 10am & assist me getting out of bed, washing, dressing & transferring to my wheelchair.
This assistance is invaluable to both myself & my wife.

All the staff are professional, friendly, kind, considerate & caring and I am completely comfortable & satisfied with their visits.

Thank you, for taking the time and trouble to write this Outstanding review, for which we are hugely grateful. We work very hard indeed on not taking anything away from your independence but simply supporting you to make day-to-day life a bit easier for you and your wife. We have been using Home Instead to support our mother, who has early onset Alzheimer's, for the past 3 years. We can't speak more highly about the support she has received from her amazing team of carers who have helped her stay as as independent as possible and continue to find joy in her day to day life. Communication has always been excellent from the management team (thanks to them) as her care needs have evolved over the years. We are very grateful to have found an agency and carers we can trust which allows us to focus on spending quality time with our Mum as a family, rather than worrying about her day to day needs and admin. Thank you again to the whole team!

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Your mother is truly dear to many of us, and early-onset dementia, whilst a cruel disease, presents a situation where we are able to support Mum, who is fit and active, with a dog to walk, in doing all the things a woman of her age would want to do. We love having the opportunity to support in...

Thank you to the Hereford Home Instead team for the support given to our family for the last five years - first to our father before he had a stroke and passed away, and then to our mother as she adapted to widowhood and gradually deteriorated mentally and physically. With your help Mum managed to extend her time in her own home to its full extent, giving her the independence that she wanted. We were impressed by your engagement with the family, your helpful advice to us and your ability to adapt the level of care according to Mum's changing needs. Many, many thanks to you all.

Thank you for this review and for your time taken to write it, with such personalisation. Yes, our vision is very simple: to allow mainly older people to remain living in their own home for as long as is possible and generally where they prefer to be, which was clearly the case in your Mum's case,...

The manager came to visit my aunt to help with an appeal for attendance allowance. She was extremely helpful and explained the paperwork to my aunt with great patience. The manager phoned the attendance allowance team and submitted the appeal by phone which took the pressure off my aunt and myself. The appeal was successful. We can't thank her enough.

The HI team in general have been supportive and patient with my aunt and we are very grateful that she has this service in place.

We are so grateful for the care given to our 95 yr old mother, which has enabled her to stay in her own home for as long as possible. Some of the carers have become good friends to Mum and she always looked forward to seeing 'her girls'! Home Instead adapted to Mum's needs after she broke her pelvis and as her memory was failing; she was always treated with respect and with a listening ear, as she loved to tell stories of her life.

Thanks to you all

My 92 year old father always wanted to stay at home as long as possible.

Home Instead provided him with an excellent care package which allowed him to extend his stay at home by a further 18 months. We were provided with a service that adapted over this period to cater for dad's changing requirements. It was a real team service from the staff in the office to the carers who provided very kind care.

I cannot recommend their services too highly and am very grateful for all the help and support we received.

When I needed some help at home after an emergency admission to hospital my family, all of whom live over 100 miles away, immediately contacted Home Instead who had provided such wonderful care during my wife’s final illness. As a retired hospital physician, I knew that my wife had presented complex care requirements in what proved to be her final illness. The staff of Home Instead rose magnificently to every new challenge and were always prepared to "go the extra mile", whether caring for my wife or supporting me at what was an exceptionally difficult time for both of us. Friendly but always respectful, they had clearly been well trained and took a pride in their work. The Care Quality Commission rated Home Instead Hereford as 'Good' in every category. As an experienced clinician who observed them at first hand over several months, I considered them 'Outstanding' in all categories.

When I needed help I didn’t have to wait until the next day for hospital transport to get home because two carers arrived from Home Instead that morning to collect me. I don’t need much help now but what they provide is invaluable, e.g. changing bed linen, getting me a meal now and then, emergency shopping when I’ve forgotten something on the supermarket order, washing up or whatever needs doing, getting me out into the country on a fine day (my eyesight prevents me from driving), I could go on and on. Always friendly, always on time (or a warning call from Head Office if delayed more than 10 minutes), always professional, I can’t recommend them too highly.

For the last 12 months or so, my dad has been taken care of by a wonderful team from Home Instead. His needs were simple at first, - company, light housework. This progressed to daily personal care when some health issues flared up and the office was able to adapt his care package very quickly.
The carers are exactly that, caring, which is so important for all concerned. My interaction with them has always been positive and friendly, they are helpful and entertaining for Dad.

One phrase from our first 'assessment' has always stuck with me and when recommending to others it is the phrase that always convinces them. Having explained how hard it had been for me to do cleaning, shopping, and personal and emotional care on my own, a particular staff member said 'Leave that to us; we will do all that so you can go back to being his daughter' and that is what it has meant to me. My time with Dad is less stressful, we have laughs and good times and that is thanks in large part to the Home Instead team.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Kim, thank you so much for this very kind and thorough review. Yes, we aim to deliver exactly that, either 'the son/daughter who cannot be there' and be your 'eyes and ears' with all the professional training or, as you remembered, allowing you to 'go back to being his daughter'. On my husband’s release from the hospital, with end-of-life care, we were allocated care from another agency, whose carers we grew to know. But I had already contacted Home Instead because our district nurses had said how good they were.
The compromise was that Home Instead would provide companionship for my husband, so I could leave him to go to town for things which could only be done in person. These carers offer kindness, interest in his life and sharing of their own interests. They will never be idle - if he’s asleep they will sweep through, notice if there is ironing to be done. They are always punctual and I know that if any nursing need should arise then they are well-qualified to help him. Sometimes our usual carer can’t come, because she is on, for example, a dementia training day. So I feel even more secure.
I am grateful for the professionalism of all at Home Instead and also for their advice and offers of help beyond the call of duty.

We have had five extra months together, thanks.

Home Instead have been providing care to my mum for 3 years. The carers have been of an excellent standard and are prepared to turn their hand to anything that needs doing, not just personal care. They turn up on time and my mum has a small team of regular carers and is not bombarded with lots of different faces (as happens with some other care agencies). The carers respect my mum’s dignity but they all seem to have a good sense of humour, which my mum enjoys. The app which records case notes of each visit and the rota (of which carer is due to visit for the next week), is particularly useful and reassuring to me as I live a long way away from my mum. I have no hesitation in recommending Home Instead.

With my grandad passing away, and Nan having health problems herself we knew that external help would be needed not only to help keep on top of the household jobs but for emotional support for her also. We are so glad we chose Home Instead as the company for her. Not only are the care professionals understanding, supportive and caring but little things get done without even having to ask them. Nan looks forward to the days they come not only for household jobs but also to have a friendly face to chat with. I don’t usually leave reviews but felt I must share our experience.
We (my mother and myself) felt nervous and apprehensive about seeking support to help us care for my lovely grandmother. It really was hugely daunting.
First, a staff member, came out to assess my grandmother's care and support requirements, she was professional, caring and sensitive to my grandmother's personal and emotional needs, as well as understanding the dynamics and personalities of our family network, and so our journey began.

‘The team’ have been an absolute success; I can not speak highly enough of them. They are professional, caring with dignity always, sympathetic, interacting beautifully with both my mother and Grandmother (lots of laughter). They are an absolute pleasure to have in the home and have bought so much peace of mind for the family. A huge thank you to all the girls (ladies) for taking such care of my amazing grandmother and the lovely ladies in the office who are always so friendly and efficient.

Natalie Cooke Job Title: Registered Manager & Owner Joined: 2019
Natalie Cooke

I started my career in private home care in 2006 and, since then, my passion and enthusiasm to work with the elderly and vulnerable adults have only increased. I began as an on-call operator and worked my way up to become a Registered Manager of a branch and then an Area Manager, looking after several branches. I started a home care office from nothing in Gloucester and grew it to over 1,000 hours of care a week, in less than 2 years, maintaining the highest retention of care staff.

Being the Registered Care Manager and Director at Home Instead Senior Care in Hereford gives me a wonderful opportunity to have a positive impact on the clients we care for and keeps me closer to the ground and available to our clients and CAREGivers. I'm responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the services we provide, and I attend client consultations and love getting to know every one of our clients!

I look forward to every consultation and the opportunity to find solutions, ensuring our clients’ emotional and physical well-being is respected and cared for at all times.

When I am not at work, I am kept busy by my 3 children, 4 dogs, my parents (who live with us) and my husband, from being a taxi driver, ensuring my children attend clubs, college, school, and outings, to endless baskets of laundry. I am still trying to figure out how they each wear 4 outfits in a day! Working in care and being a mum to teenagers keeps life exciting; I would not do anything else. Being a part of the Home Instead Senior Care family, one of the most trusted care companies in the United Kingdom, is both a privilege and an honour.
