Urgent Call for Befriending Volunteers

There’s a quiet kind of loneliness affecting many older people in Farnham — the sort that creeps in after days without conversation, visitors, or even a friendly face at the door. That’s why the local “Befriending” project is putting out a heartfelt call for volunteers to help make a difference in someone’s life, simply by showing up for a chat and a cup of tea.

The idea behind the project is simple. Volunteers are matched with an older person in the community who could benefit from regular companionship. There’s no pressure to be an expert, counsellor, or carer — just someone willing to listen, share stories, and spend a little time together. And the commitment is small: just one hour every other week, or even one hour a month. For many people taking part, those visits can mean everything.

“Human connection matters so much, especially for people who may spend long periods alone,” says Liz Young. “Sometimes a simple visit becomes the highlight of someone’s week.”

The project is currently relaunching in a handful of pilot towns, including Farnham, with the aim of creating a sustainable, community-led support network that can grow over time. Anyone interested in volunteering will receive full training before being matched with someone. That includes practical guidance around communication skills, dementia awareness, and safeguarding, so volunteers feel confident and supported from the start.

In a world where people are increasingly disconnected, especially older adults living alone, the project hopes to remind people that even small acts of time and attention can have a real impact.
