Hydration during the warm weather

As we continue to experience warmer weather, Gold Standard Care would like to remind everyone of the importance of staying hydrated, particularly older adults and vulnerable individuals receiving care at home.

During hot weather, the body loses more fluids through sweating, which can quickly lead to dehydration if fluids are not replaced regularly. Dehydration can cause tiredness, dizziness, headaches, confusion, urinary infections, and in more serious cases, hospital admission.

At Gold Standard Care, the health, comfort, and wellbeing of our clients and staff remain our top priority. Our care teams are encouraging and supporting individuals to drink fluids regularly throughout the day, even if they do not feel thirsty. Water, diluted squash, milk, and other non-alcoholic drinks can all help maintain hydration levels.

We also encourage families and carers to: • Offer drinks little and often • Keep homes cool and well ventilated • Avoid excessive heat during the hottest part of the day • Look out for signs of dehydration such as dark urine, dry mouth, confusion, or dizziness

Together, we can help ensure everyone stays safe, healthy, and comfortable during this warm spell.
