I have two carers, both are satisfactory. Staff are the most experienced. I have had one of the carers for quite a while and would be sorry to lose her. The other carer has been with me for less time. She is less experienced but willing to learn. The carer I have had for longer is a good person for my most recent carer to learn from.

Over the past few years, my Uncle has had the experience of having used several companies providing personal care. Without doubt 1st Focus has stood head and shoulders above them all! The care and compassion shown by carers and office staff, in my experience, is exceptional. Not only were my Uncles basic needs taken care of but so many other tasks were carried out to keep him safe, comfortable and engaged. They called upon health professionals when they thought they were needed and were always willing to discuss, advise and give support to me over the phone. As I live 350 miles away this was invaluable. Each and every one of the 1st Focus team deserves our heartfelt thanks for the job they do and I will always be grateful to them.

The care my mum has received recently (especially during the months of the Covid pandemic) has been nothing short of excellent. What I really appreciate is the consistent regularity of the carers just now. By only having a few carers, not only are we keeping my mum safe, but there is a familiarity of people and routine which is of huge benefit and keeps all our lives simple. A major, major thank you to three members of staff for all their care, patience, understanding and hard work.

Overall Experience
This care company has been looking after my 93-year-old friend for several months now. Once we settled into a routine whereby he had the same carers coming in daily, things worked really well. Almost all of the carers were well trained and attentive to his needs and if there were any issues that arose I would contact the management team and they would sort the issue as a matter of urgency. The carers have all worked tirelessly throughout this pandemic to attend to his needs, washing, showering, dressing, feeding, laundry and encouraging him to do some activity in the house to keep him active and alert.
As a nurse myself, I would have no issue with recommending this care company to friends and family. We had a few really awful experiences before we were transferred to 1st Focus and they have restored my faith in the care sector.

Very well done, management and carers alike!

Xeila Ferreira Job Title: Care Coordinator Joined: 2019
Xeila Ferreira

I moved to Edinburgh from Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in 2017 and began working with 1st Focus Homecare in 2019. I started as a Care Assistant and, over time, progressed to Care Supervisor before stepping into my current role as Care Coordinator.

While working with 1st Focus, I successfully completed both SVQ 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care, as well as a Professional Development Award (PDA) in Health and Social Care Supervision. These qualifications have helped me strengthen my skills in supporting both clients and colleagues to ensure the highest standard of care.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing the guitar and singing — two of my favourite hobbies. I also love animals and cooking, especially when I can share meals with family and friends.

Amy Shikuku Job Title: Business Development Manager Joined: 2017
Amy Shikuku

I am the Business Development Manager and have worked for 1st Focus Homecare since 2017. I was previously the HR Coordinator and hold a CIPD qualification in this field. I greatly enjoy my current role as I get to meet and engage with people who are looking to arrange one of our packages of care. Being able to create a package of care that works for a service user and the people in their lives is highly rewarding.

I previously worked hands-on as a carer, and the experience I gained in those roles helped me to understand what is truly important to the people who use our services and their families. Before joining 1st Focus Homecare, I worked for a couple of homecare providers in Edinburgh, gaining experience in all aspects of care and seeing firsthand the impact that having the right support can have on everyone involved.

Having had a grandparent who suffered from Alzheimer’s, I understand the emotional and physical strain that such a diagnosis places on families. This experience gave me a greater appreciation of the kind of support we all need when we find ourselves in these situations. Knowing that there are compassionate professionals available to support your loved ones — and to help you spend quality time with them — is truly invaluable.

I am from Edinburgh and grew up in the Blackford area. I have a son, a daughter, and three cats. I have a great love of the theatre, reading (especially Georgette Heyer novels), art, birdwatching, and playing badminton.

Katherine Morrow Job Title: Care Supervisor Joined: 2019
Katherine Morrow

I am one of the Care Supervisors, and I have worked for 1st Focus Homecare since 2019. Before joining the office team, I supported council visits and, more recently, private companionship care visits. I really enjoy getting to know service users and their families to ensure they receive the best care possible.

I studied and earned my BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. As part of my studies, I completed four placements across different sectors and services. I have always been interested in looking after others and working with them in a person-centred way, and I have also worked in two different care homes.

I have lived in and around Edinburgh all my life. I have a passion for craft activities, music, and musical theatre. I attend the theatre regularly, supporting both professional and amateur dramatic productions. I also volunteer for Girlguiding Scotland as a Leader in Training for a Rainbows unit in Musselburgh.

I was a member of the National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCOS) and have toured with the choir across the country and in Europe, including a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York. I am also a member of an Edinburgh-based choir, Cadenza, performing regularly at the Fringe Festival and throughout the year.

Purity Chizhande Job Title: Care Supervisor Joined: 2025
Purity Chizhande

Purity is a compassionate and dedicated care professional with a strong background in counselling, mental health, and community development. Originally from Zimbabwe, she holds a BA in Counselling Psychology as well as a Bible School diploma and has completed both basic and advanced counselling training.

Her career has taken her across Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa, and now Scotland, giving her a rich cross-cultural perspective on care and support. In Zimbabwe, Purity founded a non-profit organisation that partnered with schools, clinics, communities, and churches to provide psychosocial support and carry out charitable initiatives. She also partnered with churches in Mozambique and South Africa to deliver community-focused charity work, extending care and hope to those in need. During her time in South Africa, she also served as a Crisis Counsellor for a national helpline, playing a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alongside her practical work, Purity is an accomplished author of three books, including a recent mental health self-help guide. Her writing reflects her passion for empowering individuals to take charge of their well-being.

Since relocating to Edinburgh, Purity has continued to grow in her career — supporting adults with learning disabilities as a Support Worker, Acting Senior, and then Senior within her first year. In April 2025, she joined 1st Focus Homecare as a Care Supervisor, where she leads with empathy and works to create environments where people feel valued, supported, and empowered in their daily lives.

Outside of work, Purity has been married for 25 years and is a proud mother of two adult children, whom she home-educated. The fourth of seven siblings, she values strong family connections and community. She enjoys gardening, DIY projects, and finding creative ways to make spaces feel welcoming.

Helna Layon Job Title: Care Supervisor Joined: 2022
Helna Layon

I joined 1st Focus in 2022 as a Care Assistant, where I quickly developed a strong passion for person-centred care and supporting individuals to live independently in their own homes. Providing compassionate, high-quality care has always been important to me, and I was delighted to recently step into the role of Care Supervisor. I now oversee care delivery, support and mentor our team, and help ensure we continue to maintain the highest standards in everything we do.

Before moving into the care sector, I worked as a secondary school teacher in India. Teaching helped me build strong communication, leadership, and mentoring skills, which I now use every day to guide and support colleagues in a positive and structured way.

During my university years, I volunteered as a leader with the National Service Scheme (NSS), taking part in community development and outreach initiatives. I also hold a Master’s degree in Physics, which reflects my dedication to learning and personal growth.

Outside of work, I love travelling and exploring new countries with my husband. I am trained in Indian classical dance and enjoy performing Bharathanatyam on various stages. I am also a member of The Ghungroo Revolution, a Glasgow-based dance group.

I truly believe that working alongside a dedicated and supportive care team gives me the confidence and motivation to keep growing, improving, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people.

Irena Teklinska Job Title: Care Supervisor Joined: 2024
Irena Teklinska

I moved to Fort William from Poland in 2010. I found a job in a Care Home and thought I would give it a go. This job was meant to last a few months until I found something else. But I enjoyed helping and working with people, so I stayed working there and learning new things. Six years later, with lots of new skills, experience and SVQ2 certificate, I moved to Edinburgh. I worked in another Care Home for seven years before joining 1st Focus in 2024. I started as a support worker and progressed to become a supervisor. My over 14 years of experience working with the elderly helps me in my new role to understand clients' needs and help them the best I can.

Outside work, I love reading books, walking, playing badminton and cycling. I enjoy jigsaw, cinema and like socialising.
