Right at Home only employs caregivers with genuine empathy for the people they are asked to look after. 'Kind', 'competent', 'caring', 'a lifeline' are just some of the words that clients have used to describe the Right at Home caregivers.

The company offers its new members of staff an intensive training programme that they have to complete before starting work at Right at Home and this training continues throughout their career.

My mother has been having a companionship visit once a week, for the past year. She has always been very independent but is now 90 and finds it hard to get out. The visits have been a huge success and Mum looks forward to her chat and walk with her lovely carer. I have been so impressed with the service, care and professionalism shown to us both.

Dear Ernest, thank you very much for your feedback, I am very glad that you are so happy with the service and CareGivers. I am very lucky to have such an amazing team in Right at Home!

So pleased that both my parents received such wonderful personal care from the team in Farnham - the staff were all so lovely and patient and nothing was too much trouble. It give me peace of mind to know that they were visiting as I live over an hour away and could only visit once or twice a week - they did everything I would have done and always with a smile. If they was anything they were unsure about then they would contact me straight away.
Sadly my dad died recently and my mum later had to go into a care home as her physical needs and dementia became too severe to be managed at home. Really glad I found them and I would definitely recommend them.

The carer that visited mum every week gave her so much happiness and friendship and mum developed a very close bond with her. She looked forward to her visits eagerly and the admin staff were fabulous too. The companionship visits really brightened up mum's day and opened up her fast diminishing world and also gave me a break without having to worry.

Initially, we involved Right At Home on a basis of befriending and companionship, with a view to providing assistance to my wife with personal care. My wife had rejected assistance from myself so it was a tricky and sensitive situation.
The carer came in and gradually won over my wife's trust and now visits on a regular basis, this also gives me a break.
We envisage increasing care as necessary in the future.

My mother needed additional support to remain at home on discharge from the hospital over 2 years ago. We chose Right at Home because we were impressed by their commitment to one-hour calls, and to shaping care around her individual needs. She has just moved to residential care due to increased support needs, but her experience of Right at Home Care Givers over the last 2 years was very good. Mum developed excellent relationships with the steady group of Care Givers who supported her, and we were all greatly impressed by their compassion, humanity, humour and commitment to accommodating mum's needs. The care and support she received were fundamental to her being able to maintain a level of independence in her own home. We were also appreciative of the efficiency of the office and admin staff, and the interest and commitment of the management to discussing ideas and concerns. More broadly, Right at Home seems to have a genuine commitment to the well-being of its clients.

My discharge from the nursing home was delayed until carers could be arranged, However, when they were arranged, I came home and I couldn't have better carers who are absolutely excellent in personal care. They fill up the bird feeder, vacuum the carpets and help me to go to the town for my weekly shopping for myself and also a trip to Pets at Home to buy food for my cat and also for the wild birds.

The carers came for an hour each day to cook lunch and helped the client take the correct medicines, in the correct amount. They used their initiative but did not override the wishes of the client. They communicated well with the family of the client and any problems or concerns about the health of the client.
The carers' management were easily contactable and were aware of the minutiae of the client's case.

Right at Home have been caring for my mother for two hours each day since early 2014. The team is excellent and helps with dressing, breakfast and general help around the home. Always friendly courteous and willing to help, punctuality is good and communication effective. With one hour for each visit, there is time for some conversation.

I cannot praise highly enough the services of Right at Home. They have given mum great support, friendship, loyalty and kindness during the care service given by them. Unfortunately, she needed to go into nursing care but would have loved to have continued if it had been possible to keep her at home. Thank you so much for your advice and support shown to me too. My dealing with all the staff of Right At Home was exceptional at a time of my life when I was under terrible stress from caring for my very frail, often ill, 85 year old husband who also has dementia. I was in fact at my wits end. All the staff were caring, reliable and my husband accepted them all into our home. His main carer formed a genuine friendship with him, stimulating and encouraging him, escorting him on trips out (museum, garden centre) and creating a memory scrap book of their activities together. I could not have had better help and support.

Having had Right At Home now for 4 years looking after my mother-in-law, I can say without hesitation that the overall service and care has been exemplary. The carers have been very attentive and given excellent company to my mother-in-law at her time of need. She is now 98 and the time has come to move her into a home for 24 hour care, the Right at Home team gave her a new lease of life during their attendances. Well done to all concerned.

I have five regular carers from Right At Home. All of these carers are very aware of my needs and go to great lengths to make sure my care is given with cheerfulness. The team looking after my mother are excellent. The team members are efficient and compassionate. They are always willing to undertake additional tasks to help. Problems are few and far between. In such cases phone communication is always good, it has sometimes been unsettling for my mother when there are a lot of new faces and old ones disappear. We prefer it if regular daily timers can be maintained, mornings at 7:00 are very regular, but evenings less so.

The care my mother receives is excellent. We have been with the agency since April 2015 and have had great support. The carers are compassionate and treat my mother with dignity. The only small criticism is they only do hour slots and it is slightly expensive. Having said that the carers earn their money.

Very caring and capable team that have provided warm home support and friendship over a number of years to my father, allowing him to remain in independent living through to the age of 90. Consistently lots of laughter, rapport and empathy mixed together with the practical support reflecting both their ethos and quality staff. Very good at communicating with and working in close partnership with the family and other care organisations as one team. Highly recommend them to others looking for support for their friends and relatives.

Alastair opened Right at Home GF in 2012, having decided that homecare was a very rewarding way to work within his local community.

Alastair started his career with Unilever, where he spent some time working in Italy, after which he returned to the UK to run a family business. After selling up ahead of the credit crunch, he realised that he wanted to work within the local community and was successful in joining the growing team of Right at Home local owner/operators.

“Quality of service has always been important to me,” Alastair explains, “but with homecare it really means more than ever. I am determined that our team should give the best care in the Guildford, Farnham, Fleet, Farnborough and Aldershot area and in order to do that we need the best CareGivers. We put a lot of effort into recruiting the best people and in making Right at Home a great place to work so that we hang on to them!

“It is a hugely rewarding thing to be doing; we really do make a huge difference to people’s lives, whether that is by providing full-time, live-in care for someone with advanced dementia or assisting an older person to stay independent by helping with their shopping once a week.”

Alastair was one of the first Dementia Friends Champions and has run over 50 dementia awareness sessions in Farnham, Fleet, Guildford and Farnborough, making over 500 dementia friends. Dementia Friends is a government funded initiative run by the Alzheimer’s Society with the aim of increasing awareness and understanding of dementia in society. If you have a group that would benefit from a Dementia Friends session then do get in touch; Alastair would be very happy to come and run one for you.

Description:

I started as a care assistant working in residential settings, working my way up to a senior care officer, which included staff supervision and onsite training.

Whilst my children were young I started caring in the community. I realised very quickly that this was where I saw my career progressing – helping to provide a service to enable vulnerable people to stay at home, and seeing the positive impact that good carers can achieve.

I went on to become a complex carer, caring for young adults with life- limiting conditions. I held this role for 12 years before progressing to become a risk assessor and trainer, which was a very rewarding role as I understood the needs of a client, their families and the carer.

Now as the Registered Care Manager for Right at Home, I ensure the clients are treated with the utmost dignity and respect.

As a PTLLS qualified trainer, I am able to ensure that all the carers have the appropriate training, as well as undergoing our thorough screening process, before commencing caring duties. We also ensure the carers have regular supervisions, team meetings, and onsite training.

Alastair and I are firmly committed to improving our clients’ well-being, by listening to and respecting their wishes, supporting them in all areas of their daily life, and providing carers who deliver the highest quality of care with conscientious time-keeping.

Lesley

Lesley Dean

Job Title: CareGiver

Description:

Lesley has been working with Right at Home GF for three years. She has done care work off and on since she was in her twenties, in care homes as well as caring for her Nan, Dad and Mum before they passed away.

It was seeing how her clients and family were treated both in homes and in hospital that made her realise that being a carer was what she wanted to do. Lesley saw how she could make a difference to people’s lives herself.

The minimum one hour call attracted Lesley initially; she felt this was really important and that anything less wasn’t worth it. She loves the fact that we make a difference to the clients as well as giving the family a break, safe in the knowledge that they are in good hands.

Lesley is very honest about the good and bad points of the job; “It’s not a glamorous job and you have sad days. But when I go home I know I’ve helped a lot of people who are safe in their own beds and I sleep well knowing I’ve done a good job.”

Lesley says that Right at Home feels more like a family than a company. “I have made some lifelong friends,” she adds, “and we all pull together – there is always someone you can talk to day or night.”

No two days are the same and Lesley loves some of the comments that her clients come out with. “One of my clients said that her son had taken her curlers without asking. When I asked why she said it was to do his hair. It made me laugh as he doesn’t have enough hair for curlers!”.

Lesley feels that every day working as a carer for Right at Home is rewarding; to know that she and the rest of the team help so many people to stay living in their own homes and keep their quality of life.

Lauren

Lauren Greenwood

Job Title: CareGiver

Description:

Lauren was new to care when she joined Right at Home – she came across our CareGiver ad on Gumtree, thought it looked like something she’d enjoy and gave us a call.

She admits she’s more comfortable one-to-one with people than in a large group, so having that quality time with her clients that home care offers really suits her.

Lauren remembers how her grandparents changed when they started receiving home care; “My Nan became less anxious and went back to being herself,” explains Lauren. “It’s like she started living again.” Lauren is now enjoying helping other people rediscover their love of life.

Lauren joined the team and quickly enrolled on our induction training but it wasn’t until she went out shadowing other care team members that she really started to understand the rewards of the job. She didn’t think she’d be able to help people with personal care such as washing and dressing but she surprised herself – she now visits eight clients regularly and has built up strong relationships with them.

Lauren finds it hard to choose a favourite part of her job – she loves the smile that she is greeted with when she arrives at a client’s home – “They are always so happy to see me.” But then she also loves it when they simply say ‘Thank you’ for helping them with things that we would take for granted. “They’re all so lovely,” smiles Lauren. “I love my job and I definitely did the right thing joining Right at Home – I wish I’d done it years ago.”

Carolyn

Carolyn Thomas

Job Title: CareGiver

Description:

Caz has always been a ‘people’ person – working with children and then in the hospitality sector. She spent some time working at the Bush Hotel in Farnham and loved welcoming the older members of the community and hearing their stories.

“I felt a real connection with them,” explains Caz. “They were all really interesting people – they helped fill in the gaps from my history lessons at school.” Caz was unsure how she would cope with personal care but she surprised herself.

“I absolutely love my job,” says Caz. “The best thing about it is the clients – they are always so pleased to see me and I know that I’ve made a difference to their day.

“And the minimum one hour calls make a huge difference to me,” she adds. “It gives me time to get to know the client properly and build a relationship that really works.”

Would Caz recommend a home care job? “Definitely. You have to be a people person though,” she adds, “and enjoy being around and talking to people.

“I absolutely love it.”

Kelly

Kelly Dawn

Job Title: CareGiver

Description:

Kelly joined Right at Home GF shortly after it started up and has seen the team grow from just four to over 50 CareGivers. She has wanted to work in care from a young age.

“My Dad died just four days before my 14th birthday and the people who looked after him just didn’t seem very caring,” recalls Kelly. “I knew then that I wanted to work in care and give someone else the love and care that they deserved.”

Kelly had a few years to wait – the minimum age required to care for someone one-to-one in their own home was (and still is) 18. She finished school, although the emotional upset affected her exams, and took a job as a hairdresser in her home town of Aldershot. She also tried her hand at waitressing but the dream of being a carer didn’t go away and as soon as she turned 18 she applied for a role with a local homecare agency. It wasn’t what she expected. She didn’t enjoy all the rushing around, spending just 15 minutes at a time with clients. So she applied for a role with a large residential care home but that didn’t live up to her expectations either.

“There was very little one-to-one time with the residents and I wasn’t able to build a relationship and get to know any of them properly – it wasn’t what I wanted at all.”

Then in September 2012, she spotted an ad for a new home care company offering minimum one hour calls. She applied for the role and hasn’t looked back.

Kelly began as a Right at Home CareGiver and was soon promoted to be Right at Home’s first Senior CareGiver.

“I feel like I’ve grown with Right at Home,” explains Kelly. “I didn’t learn much working in the care home but since working for Right at Home I’ve done loads of training and I’m working towards Level 2 in Maths and English too – filling in the gaps!”

Kelly is a very popular member of the team, always trying to help everyone, and is described as ‘down-to-earth’, ‘open’ and ‘friendly’. But the common theme running through everyone’s comments is Kelly’s laugh:

“She brightens the clients’ day with her upbeat personality and infectious laugh.”

“Her laugh has me in stitches.”

“Her laugh is contagious, making me smile even if I don’t feel like it.”

All in all, it’s clear that Kelly is a well-loved and valuable member of the Right at Home care team.
