Formally known as TLC Homecare, Choices Homecare's motto is 'skilled care your way', which is a philosophy they look to bring to older and vulnerable adults throughout South and West Yorkshire. They are proud to support people to live in their own homes for longer and can provide a full range of homecare services.

Their 'Values' are embedded throughout the Organisation to ensure they reflect their Vision (...to deliver a service to be proud of), and are able to deliver the best quality of care that they can for all of their service users.

They offer a person centred approach to a wide range of care needs (offering support with: personal care, meal preparation, medication assistance, home respite/safety check visits or sitting services whilst family go out (or other), assisting service users to go out into the community, shopping, light domestic help and more). They can also provide support to adults who suffer dementia, or those with learning or other disabilities.

There is a strong focus on quality recruitment and training and Choices are passionate about delivering safe, well planned services; care and support workers promote choice and independence to assist service users in remaining as independent as possible, whatever the situation. Outcome-focused services take account of client preferences and aspirations, with 'Choices' considering themselves as 'working in partnership with their service users' to deliver, quality services to each and every one.

Overall good. Certain carers that visit have not been as good as others. Some write in the manual that duties have been done which have not. Eg saying that Mum had taken her medication but it was found by my brother on the table when he visited. Not being informed of a fall she received and not all
the carers change her.

The care that my mother gets is very good. The only fault I can find is that the visits are not all on time but I think a lot of that is because of staff being off sick etc.
Reply from Elaine Bradley-Smith, Employee Engagement & Communications Officer at Choices Homecare (Barnsley)Thank you for your review, we take feedback seriously to help us improve our services as we move into the future. We are pleased you are happy with the care received, please rest assured we do all we can to deliver our service user's calls within the 30 minute time allowances required. From time to time, staff are sick and a different carer may attend, which can sometimes result in a later than usual call. Please contact the office directly if you have any issues and we will do our best to help.

Generally, this care plan is working with a few minor problems that have been raised with the review coordinator on her recent visit. Set up the new care plan in June and reviewed it recently and we have found her very helpful and friendly. My mum is happy with the carers who visit her twice daily.
One issue we do have is that when contacting the office regarding issues of care, the responses vary from positive to defensive depending on who one is speaking to.
Reply from Elaine Bradley-Smith, Employee Engagement & Communications Officer at Choices Homecare (Barnsley)Thank you for taking the time to review us on Homecare.co.uk. We are very pleased to hear that, generally, you find your mum's care plan is working. However, we are sorry you feel the office aren't always as positive as they could be when you contact them, and your comments will be passed on to the managers of the service to enable us to look into these concerns. Thanks again for completing your review, we do really appreciate all feedback received, thank you.

TLC cannot be relied upon or trusted to do as requested. This includes not putting reading glasses on after me stating not to put them on at least three times. My mother in law does not put them on herself, but will not take them off once the carers have put them on for her. The carers are not good
at varying food offered when someone is not able to choose for themselves. Most importantly, the carers cannot be trusted to undertake extra visits as arranged during our holidays. Management listens to complaints over the phone but nothing changes. Management is slow/do not put requests into place. Management does not phone back as agreed.

TLC has been caring for Dad for the last few years. Dad likes all his carers and he looks forward to seeing them. Dad has six care calls each day with 2 carers each visit. If Dad is unwell or has a problem, they always let me know. Having such good care means that Dad can stay in his own home. I have
total confidence in TLC.

The carers turn up on time, all very friendly and always make my mum feel at ease. She always has a laugh and joke with them and when they have showered her and put her to bed she has a conversation with them.
She is very comfortable with them and even though she has dementia, they treat her with respect.

  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Home Care Provider is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.627 for Choices Homecare (Barnsley) is calculated as follows: ( (109 Excellents x 5) + (39 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 158 Ratings = 4.627
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

    The 5 points available are broken down as follows: 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.5 Points for the second and third Positive Reviews, 0.25 Points for each of the next two Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3, 2nd = 0.5, 3rd = 0.5, 4th = 0.25, 5th = 0.25, 6th = 0.05, 7th = 0.05, 8th = 0.05, 9th = 0.05, 10th = 0.05, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025)

    The 5 points relating to the number of Positive Reviews for Choices Homecare (Barnsley) is based on 26 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as follows: 3 + 0.5 + 0.5 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 5
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Home Care Provider does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Care Coordinator Barnsley Joined: 2023

I'm Sarah, a care coordinator covering the Cudworth, Town, Darton, Worsbrough, plus any other areas of Barnsley in between.

I never thought of ever getting into care work until the horrible COVID-19 struck, and I couldn't do my previous job. I felt grounded and needed to get out of the house. I then saw a job for home care and thought I'd give that a go! I fell in love with care so much that I gave up my other job and became a team leader, and then, due to hard work, dedication and transferable skills, I became a care coordinator. I joined Choices due to the positive things I had heard and the career progression that is offered. Since starting, I have never looked back and can't wait to see where this journey will take me.

In my spare time, I love spending time with my beautiful little boy and husband.
